Useful mobile apps for your travelling needs. Feb 16, 2010

As iPhones and BlackBerrys become the common cellular preference among the global community, so to does applications of thousands of different varieties, all created to make your life easier.

Well, airport applications – or apps – are definitely among the most used apps, especially with those who travel often for business. Weather updates, flight arrival and departure times, airport info, and rental car apps are just a few of the many different buttons you can add to your phone’s home screen. Even airport games are available!

Below are a few apps that are among the more popular, or what I would believe to be the most useful. If you’re looking for a full review with user input of these apps, there are plenty of them out there. Just search the name and type ‘Review’, and you’ll get your fix.

Weather Eye

Current, short-term and long-term (7 days) forecasts are all available for just about any major city worldwide. Great to have when travelling.

FlightStats

Type in the flight number and you’ll get up-to-the-minute flight data. And if you don’t know the flight number, just type in the airport it left from or the one it’s arriving to. Also includes info on major airports, weather and airline contacts.

Wi-Fi Finder

Hundreds of thousands of spots worldwide are listed in this app, letting you know where to find free and paid Wi-Fi connections.

GateGuru

Launched last year, this app is fast becoming widely used. GateGuru gives users information about what types of shops and restaurants are available on the other side of security – something not commonly found on the Internet – and lets users write reviews for other travelers. Only covers US airports, 85 in total.

Airport Mania

A game that just about anyone can play. Run your own airport, refuel the planes, make money and upgrade infrastructure. Lot’s of fun, and a great to pass the time while waiting for a flight. Check out a YouTube review here.

easyCar

Pretty simple: type in where you want to pick up the car, your price and the type of car you’re looking for. You can pay for it through the app, and receive a confirmation through text message.

This is Dan Gellert, CEO of GateGuru. Thanks very much for covering us! Just a side note that I believe will be of interest to James Armstrong Richardson Airport and its travelers - we will be launching support for Canadian airports in the next month or so. Please be on the lookout!
