Art at airports around the world is quite common, often showcasing the cultural and history of the region in different mediums. Some airports have few exhibits whith large pieces, while others have dozens of exhibits that are often changing. LA International Airport is one of those places, and a recent exhibit by an LA artist - Yong Sin - is attracting attention as his methods of building each piece of art are defying tradition. Though to the untrained eye - like mine - you wouldn't know it.

Drawn to Form -- Artist Defines and Defies Tradition in New Art Exhibit at Los Angeles International Airport

LOS ANGELES, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, announces a new exhibition of over 25 paintings of inspired abstract forms made from acrylic, masking tape, paper and wood titled Op Collage by artist Yong Sin, on display at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) until May 31, 2010.

Located in Terminal 1, in Gates 1 and 2, to ticketed passengers, Sin reveals an accumulation of hand-drawn, unmeasured geometric shapes that intuitively build each shape to create the illusion of precise, outward symmetry. "My goal is to explore the 'idea' of shapes as opposed to their measured reality," states the Los Angeles-based artist.

Sin creates just enough expressive variation to the seemingly endless recurring shapes to make the viewer notice there is more than meets the eye. Lines and color seem to shift, creating a feeling of possibilities unfolding as the mind focuses throughout each aspect.

The viewer is drawn to a visual sanctity of order, drawing the viewer onto an intimate stage where her shapes begin a new play and take an especially animated life. At close range Sin's aesthetic shifts from formal to informal, simple to complex, and static to dynamic.

The purpose of the Airport Arts Exhibition Program at LAX and LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT), is to educate and entertain the traveling public, while emphasizing a cultural experience highlighting what makes Los Angeles memorable and interesting. Exhibits may be historic, popular, artistic, or graphic design in nature and may arise from museums, fine art, archives, environment, or other fields. Exhibitions can be found on display in Terminals 1, 2, 3 and Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX, and Terminals 2 and 4 at LA/Ontario.
