Airport firefighters hold Airport Fire Captain for the Day Contest in association with Fire Prevention Week

WINNIPEG – October 1, 2009 - Winnipeg Airports Authority firefighters are holding a contest where two winners will be chosen to be Airport Fire Captain for the Day.

The Airport Fire Captain for the Day includes a day at the airport fire hall with fire safety instruction, pizza lunch, overview of airport firefighting and a parting gift basket with fire safety equipment. The contest is being held in association with Fire Prevention Week which runs October 4 - 10th, 2009. It is open to youth and consists of either a colouring contest or essay submission. Not only a great way of raising awareness around fire prevention, it is guaranteed to be a fun and rewarding experience for both winners and our firefighters.”

The Winnipeg Airports Authority Fire Department is mandated is to provide fire protection services in the event of an aircraft incident or accident at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. Winnipeg Airports Authority maintains a staff of 16 professional firefighters and operates 24 hours a day year round and trained to the standards of the Canadian Aviation Regulations and the National Fire Protection Association.

Winnipeg Airports Authority is a non-share capital corporation responsible for the management and operation of Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and affiliate businesses. All surplus revenue over expenses is reinvested by WAA back into the community, primarily through airport development projects. WAA is self sufficient with taxpayers not directly involved in financing airport site redevelopment which is being paid through Airport Improvement Fees (AIF).
